13.05.03 - New resource for playgroups and crèches.
From Scripture Union Australia.
More and more Australian churches are reaching out to young families in their community via playgroups for preschool children and support groups for their carers. They are taking up the challenge of running playgroups which are comfortable for families who are not used to church, while ensuring that the Christian message comes through. And it's not easy.
There are two basic aspects to these groups. One is the relational side, showing God's love to young families. The other is providing excellent constructive play activities for the children, to aid their early development and set a good foundation for faith. To do both well, takes expertise, support and commitment.
With this in mind, Scripture Union has released a new range of resources called
Tiddlywinks, available now through Christian bookshops or SU Mail Order.

13.05.03 - United Christian Broadcaster's Conference 2003 'Enlarging Your World'.
From UCB Headquarters.
In late April, broadcasters from across Australia and around the world (Pakistan, UK, NZ, Canada, Estonia, PNG, Pacific Islands etc.) came together for a power-packed conference in Brisbane that arguably was one of UCB's best.
The UCB Conference has become the premier Christian Australasian broadcasting industry event that brings together personnel from Australia's community radio broadcasters, national TV & radio broadcasters from several countries, national & international short-wave broadcasters and TV & radio programme providers.
This year's conference, held at the Bardon Conference Centre on Mt Coot-tha, Brisbane, was titled "Enlarging Your World". Its aim was to increase broadcasting professionalism and, just like Jabez in the Bible, allow the Lord to extend the boundaries of

13.05.03 - Matthew Hunt speaks at Chinchilla's 52nd convention.
By Royce Perkins.
"The resurrection is one of the central tenets of the Christian faith but it doesn't lie at the heart of our faith - Jesus Christ does", declared Rev. Matthew Hunt at the 52nd annual "Keswick" Convention at Chinchilla in Queensland. "The resurrection points to Him and how wonderful and astounding He is, and how we must listen to Him and let Him speak for Himself. We have all we need in the Lord Jesus".
Mr. Hunt, formerly a Sydney solicitor and pastor, and since November the Ministry Team Leader at Helensvale Baptist Church on Queensland's Gold Coast, preached seven messages during Queensland's Labour Day weekend (May 3-5) on the theme "Listen Up! Letting Jesus speak for himself", based on Mark's Gospel.

13.05.03 - Pastor wins Queensland by-election.
By Royce Perkins.
Wesleyan Methodist pastor Chris Foley has been declared the winner of a by-election for the Queensland state seat of Maryborough. He will take the seat in the Queensland Parliament as an independent.
Mr. Foley was one of eight candidates for the seat - National Party, ALP, One Nation, the Greens, and four independents. He narrowly missed National Party preselection, resigned from the National Party, and campaigned as an independent. In an ironic twist, the official National Party candidate's preferences pushed Mr. Foley over the line.
Bearded, and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle rider, Mr. Foley combines his pastoring with financial planning.
Brisbane's daily newspaper, The Courier-Mail, editorialised on 28 April that "Maryborough voters decided they liked and trusted the Wesleyan Methodist minister and financial planner, so they elected him regardless of what the major parties told them".
Mr. Foley said that he intends to work with Premier Beattie and Opposition Leader Springborg to get more funding and services for Maryborough. He plans to continue his church work and keep managing the finances of his clients. |
