28.09.02 - ACT Government dumps Judith Durham.

From The National Gospel Happening.

The National Gospel Happening, a Canberra based community charity organisation, have been devastated by the news that ACT Festivals, a department of the ACT Government has denied funding for their event this October long weekend. The opening concert at Llewellyn Hall on Friday 4 October 2002 was to feature a performance by international music legend Judith Durham of The Seekers. After extensive negotiations with Ms Durham's management about the governments decision not to help fund this years event it was decided the event should still go ahead at the smaller ANU Arts Centre but without Judith Durham appearing.

A spokesperson from the National Gospel Happening concedes that the decision by the government has 'devastated' the organisers and severely restricted the capacity of the event to fully maximise its fundraising activities for local charities. "It is ironic that the charities we fund are non-government funded community soup kitchens and family support organisations, so after a community organisation such as ours does its best to support these charities and raise funds for their work through the event we still can't get any help from the local government despite our efforts. It is an appalling situation given the record the ACT government has in the area of funding local 'events'. Even the seniors' matinee concert and most disabled performances had to be cancelled due to lack of funding for the venue, despite the genuine and extraordinary efforts of organisers to have these significant members of the community involved.

The National Gospel Happening has found some mighty significant support in the absence of Judith Durham and despite the lack of support by the ACT government. International gospel artists are flying out from the US to perform at the event and Australian Gospel legend Jimmy Little has agreed to make a special appearance at the opening concert in place of Judith Durham, who will now depart as scheduled for a European concert tour.

The National Gospel Happening Music Festival will be staged 4-5 October 2002 at the ANU Arts Centre, Canberra and further information can be obtained either through the web site nationalgospelhappening.org or by calling 6280 4166.

27.09.02 - Crew cuts.

From Wes Jay, Woodlands Media.

Ginny Owens will soon release a collector's edition enhanced EP. 'Blueprint' will include a video of her next radio single 'With Me'.

Bill and Gloria Gaither's 'Let Freedom Ring' and 'God Bless America' debuted at # 35 and 44 respectively on Billboard's Top 200 albums chart last week. They also landed #1 and 2 on the mainstream music-video chart and both audio and video Christian SoundScan charts.

27.09.02 - Bands required and Emerald gig for YWAM.

From Graham Morphett, Mullet TV.

October
Our preliminary band listings for the Funky Sun are on the web at www.mullettv.com - some of these bookings will change. There is room for more bands, but note that the first three slots are basically unplugged. We are also planning to do the Funky Sun thru November but want to wait and see how they go in October first.

November
YWAM is doing an outreach in Emerald, and would love to have some bands to support them on either Friday 8th or Saturday 9th in a concert environment. There are openings for bands at Caboolture on the 9th November.

December
Movieworld plans proceed and we will be in touch for the 21st December soon.

January
They will likely be doing one on the Car Park roof in Surfers again in January 2003 so let me know if you are interested in this one as well - I don't have an exact date, but it is likely to be about the 4th. We are also thinking about a gig at Caboolture in the open in late January.

On the news front, we did a gig with Supafish and 5 other bands on Sunday night last in Morayfield and really loved the concept. It was in a park, there were 4 'Christian' bands and two others. The fans of both bands mixed well, and the bands themselves got on really well together. We were blessed with the sound system which Mental As Anything used the night before on the Gold Coast - all 3000 watts of it - so we witnessed to most of Morayfield! Everyone agreed that we wanted more of this sort of event.

Mullet TV loves to do gigs where the bands are unknown - where we are showing people just how great you all are! But we're also pretty keen to have a second event style next year which will be worship focussed - so if you are interested in playing at such an event pls log your interest with me.

Finally, the break from gis is now over - with a vengeance! But during the break we've done quite a bit of work with video clips and sound, and have come up with some good stuff for future gigs and for the TV Show 'God Rocks', plans for which continue to progress. Phil now has acceptances from 4 networks for the show - so work will begin soon on the first 8 programs.

27.09.02 - This week on Oz Christian radio.

From Wes Jay, Woodlands Media.

Of the 219 songs reported on high rotation this week by the 25 stations and around 10 programs that report airplay data to The Rock Across Australia (TRAA), 60 songs (27.4%) are by Australian acts. And it seems home grown acts are strongly favoured as 30% of the Top 100 Most Played Songs are Australian too.

Audio Adrenaline's 'Ocean Floor' continues as the country's most played Christian song with most stations (AC and CHR) now airing it on high rotation. True Vibe's 'See the Light' is the most added song this week.

27.09.02 - Australian music quota under review.

From Wes Jay, Woodlands Media.

The Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) is reviewing its Code of Practice. One important aspect of the Code is the Australian music requirement, currently set at 20%. Under the draft new code, the CBAA recommends that Australian music content increase to 25% bringing community (and Christian) stations to the same level as most commercial stations.

The peak body for Christian broadcasters, the Association of Christian Broadcasters is not supporting the increase. It has written to the CBAA recommending that Australian content requirements be halved to 10% for stations playing "100% Christian music".

Two "blended" music stations (Christian stations playing a mix of 65-70% mainstream and 30-35% Christian music) have supported ACB's proposal for all Christian stations. Woodlands Media recognises the contribution and support Christian radio in this country has made to help build the careers and ministries of many Australian artists. Without it, many artists would not enjoy the ministry base and audience support they have today.

Equally, Australian Christian music has helped build Christian radio's identity and potency as a force to be reckoned with, and provided stations with a steady pool of radio-thon endorsements and ministry oriented events with which stations can be associated.

It is good to recognise the obvious mutual benefit for Australian musicians and radio to increasingly work together. It is hoped the CBAA will treat Christian radio equally with other forms of community radio.

27.09.02 - 96five's Gospel Piano's Festival of Choirs.

27.09.02 - Aussie singer is K-LOVE's favourite female.

From Wes Jay, Woodlands Media.

Listeners to America's K-LOVE Radio Network recently voted Rebecca St James their favourite female Christian artist in an online poll. St James took the #1 position with 12% of listeners choosing her as their favourite out of a long list of female singers. This was no small feat considering the list included lauded artists such as Crystal Lewis, Jaci Velasquez, Nicole C. Mullen, Rachael Lampa and Ce Ce Winans. The poll offered listeners the choice of choosing one of 25 female singers or writing in a name of their own. Listeners chose their top five female Christian artists and the winners were featured in the debut issue of Christian Music Planet Magazine, which hit US stands earlier this month. More than 14 000 votes were cast.

20.09.02 - TRAA Song Of The Week: Roma Waterman - 'I Can Be Found'.

From Wes Jay, Woodlands Media.

From 1991 to 1996, Roma Waterman was among the busiest Australian Christian singers to perform around the country touring with David Meece, DC Talk, Newsboys and Margaret Becker. Her hauntingly beautiful voice catapulted songs such as 'People Change', 'We All Need Some Love' and 'Freedom' to the top of Christian playlists. But working at a hectic pace week after week, month after month, Roma became so physically exhausted that she collapsed on stage during a performance in Adelaide.

Diagnosed with fibromyalgia (similar to chronic fatigue syndrome) doctors told the hard working singer she would have to give up being a performer. For 12 months Roma did nothing but sit in church. "I realised now how much I’d always done in my own strength," Roma says. "I used to push and try to make things happen because I wanted to be a successful artist and performer who was liked by people," she admits.

Three years later and still fearful of performing, Roma faced the largest number of people she’d performed to in years. Roma can’t really remember much about that night except it was the "easiest thing" she’d ever done in her life. "I heard God saying to me, ‘that’s what it’s meant to be like, Roma, when you work with the Holy Spirit’.

"My healing began that night, and today I’m totally healed," she says.

Roma’s song 'I Can Be Found' was written especially for that concert and has now been released on her 'Fearless Courage' album. It is her latest radio single.

"If you should fall, I’ll be with you and if there’s a hand on your shoulder you can be sure it’s mine. If you ever need me you can find me…" 'I Can Be Found' - Roma Waterman.

13.09.02 - Rebecca St. James reflects on the anniversary of 9/11: 'America's young seeking God'.

From Wes Jay, Woodlands Media.

One year and standing before countless audiences on stages all over America to minister hope and encouragement through her music has convinced Christian singer Rebecca St. James of one emerging fact from the tragedy of 11 September 2001. Now more than ever America - particularly her young - is seeking God with a new passion. She's witnessed the surge from coast to coast.

Last year, just two days after 9/11, St. James launched a major U.S. tour in the face of many similar tours being cancelled by artists and management fearful of the after effects of the reign of terror unleashed upon America. From September through November, Rebecca and her tour purposely shifted their musical focus to concentrate on bringing comfort and a message of hope for the future to her audiences-most of them highly populated by teens and young Americans.

Herself aboard a plane flying back from Orlando to Nashville at the very hour the World Trade Center was hit, Rebecca later that day one year ago made a purposeful choice to record the vocals of 'It Is Well' - the century old church hymn that has brought comfort to countless millions. It was written in 1873 by Horatio Gates Spafford at the rail of a ship in the midst of the Atlantic Ocean near the very spot where he had lost his family at sea just one year earlier.

One year after 9/11, it's a parallel not lost to Rebecca. She now sings the song in every concert appearance, telling the story of its origin and her interpretation of God's ongoing ministry to humanity in times of tragedy...as He did so long ago...as He did last September 11th...as He does today.

In an international interview forum last week, Rebecca was asked to share an insight on the anniversary of 9/11 with the world.

"I think that the thing that I shared after September 11th last year, and the thing I still feel very passionate about is that Jesus is our hope," she said. "We have nothing to fear because our hope is in Him. Things like September 11th could happen anywhere in the world (I pray they won't!) but we can know as Christians that nothing can separate us from the love of God."

And that, at the end of the day, is good news to the world on the one year anniversary that all will remember.

13.09.02 - "More than many of us can bear..."

From Wes Jay, Woodlands Media.

"More than many of us can bear..." (Rudy Giuliani)

Where were you when terrorists unleashed an astonishing air assault on America's military and financial power centres, hijacking four commercial jets and crashing them into the World Trade Centre in New York, the Pentagon, and the Pennsylvania countryside?

Today, the US Government is increasing pressure on its allies to broaden the "war on terrorism" and focus on Iraq. While being an important time of remembrance and reflection, this anniversary has re-opened many wounds and fears.

Just as the Psalmists expressed their hopes and despair in times of trouble, Contemporary Christian Music today expresses all the emotions that people are feeling right now. Everything from the hope they are seeking, the faith that they hold on, to and the many questions that still linger. Here is a sample of songs that provide encouragement for people who are still searching for answers, and a sense of hope.

06.09.02 - Sonfest 2003 - The bands are...

From Dale Bray, Sonfest.

Well it's the time we have all been waiting for the official line-up for Sonfest 2003!

Toby Mac - The front man for supergroup DC Talk will explode on stage on the Friday night, Jan 24th. Toby has a travelling party of 12, which includes background singers, 2 lead guitarists and a DJ. His show will blow you away and will be by far the most energetic and dynamic performance Sonfest has ever had. As a huge bonus Toby will also be performing DC Talk songs including Jesus Freak and In The Light.

Audio Adrenaline - These guys just know how to rock. No gimmicks. No lip-syncing. No games. This is pure Christian Rock with upfront evangelical lyrics that move the masses. A big favourite of Sonfest 2001, AA will close Saturday night. We will be exhausted, encouraged and lifted on high. Take a free ride with Audio Adrenaline.

Mary Mary - What can I say, this multi award winning R&B group will bring a new dimension to Sonfest. Also playing on Friday (in front of Toby Mac), Mary Mary will perform hits from the 'Thankful' album (including Shackles) plus tracks from their newly released record 'Incredible'. What a night Friday will be!

So the question remains. Who is headlining Thursday?

Well it is with great pleasure that I announce that the Paul Colman Trio (PC3) are the surprise headline act for Thursday. While PC3 continue to break the US market, the band made a last minute decision to come home and perform at Sonfest. As Sonfest strives to support great Aussie talent we shuffled the line-up to give PC3 the opportunity they deserve in headlining a night at Sonfest. PC3 will perform a full show including all our favourites plus songs from their U.S. recording 'New Map of the World'

Also performing on Thursday is pop/rock group Superchick. You may have heard their songs on many movie and TV soundtracks including Legally Blonde, MTV's Real World and Making the Band, Felicity, Nightline, The Practice and even Who wants to Be a Millionaire. On the recent Festival Con Dios tour in the states Superchick sold more CD's and T-shirts than any other artist performing, including the Newsboys. If you haven't heard Superchick then check out their website @ www.superchick.net.

Joining the Paul Colman Trio and Superchick on Thursday is New Zealand band the Lads. These guys have been touring hard and have built up a great following here in OZ. The have a solid reputation as a hard working, highly entertaining, evangelical group of Christians. If you've seen them before at the many school outreaches or at AGMF you know what I'm talking about. What a great band to start the Thursday evening of Sonfest.

Joining Audio Adrenaline on the Saturday night is the surprise artist from Sonfest 2001. South African band, Tree 63 return with their power pop/worship music that sounds like a cross between Sting, U2 and Delirious. Lead singer John Ellis has the most powerful voice in Christian music and uses it with such passion and desire to worship God. The presence of God is overwhelming when this band gets on stage. It's truly an honour to have Tree 63 return to Sonfest.

Remember when we booked Earthsuit to play the very first Sonfest and everyone thought we were crazy. Well history is about to repeat itself. This year we are bringing to you a UK artist called Andy Hunter. Like Earthsuit in 2001 you probably haven't heard of him and probably wont until he hits our shores. Well here is the inside scoop on Andy. Andy is a DJ, but not your regular DJ. He uses his talents to offer his audience a new way to experience Gods love and passion. Andy stated to lead worship through DJing at his church in Britain and since then has been used all over the world, including Matt Redman's Soul Survivor conferences in the UK and the Worship together events in the USA. I'm not going to say much more than that, be prepared!!!! Andy plays on Friday night with Mary Mary and Toby Mac.

Finally, it wouldn't be Sonfest without the great local bands who over the past years have become more and more professional and kept up the reputation started by the likes of the Newsboys, Rebecca St James, Beanbag, Rhubarb and the Paul Colman Trio. This year two talented QLD bands will experience an evening spot on main stage. Local boys Rookie will make the big move after two impressive performances at Sonfest 2001 and 2002. These guys are hard working and always put in 110%. With Paul Colman's personal stamp of approval, Rookie will showcase their new EP on Friday evening. Joining Tree 63 and AA on Saturday are long time Qld performers Alabaster Box. AB won the 96.5 Creative Challenge back in 1999 and have never looked back. This full-time band have toured all over Australia and the USA performing night after night with just one goal at hand... spreading God's Word. We are again pleased to be able to have Alabaster Box on main stage representing the many local bands who work so hard and encourage so many.

Over the coming months we will update you on the many speakers and local bands we have booked, the extra stages, electives and sports we have planned, but for now I'm sure the artist line up is enough to whet your appetite.

Just remember, if you buy you ticket before Nov 30 you get a Toby Mac 'Momentum' CD absolutely FREE!

PS Tickets and website coming September 13th.
