27.07.02 - Is Triple J biased?

From Stuart Stuart.

An interesting story - the 'war' between unsigned band Seraph's Coal and Triple J. Seraph's Coal have fired off a furious press release after the station dropped their song from the national playlist. The band's song 'Hope Is Where The Heart Is' entered the Triple J Net 50 at #2 but was conspicuously absent from the countdown. The band claims that Triple J has manipulated the chart due to major label pressure, and the fact that the band's 'message' conflicts with the station's 'beliefs'.

20.07.02 - Australian Christian radio remains predominantly un'Blessed'.

From Wes Jay, Woodlands Media.

Hillsong's 'Blessed' CD is in a league of its own! The album is outselling every Christian album in the land, and the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) has confirmed that 'Blessed' is the fourth best selling CD in the country ahead of Kylie Minogue, Lee Kernaghan, and Kasey Chambers. It is also understood that the album is on track to go 'gold'. Sensational!

In contrast, Christian radio in Australia is generally reticent to play songs from the album on high rotation limiting its airplay to praise and worship programs (1-2 hours a week.) It is hoped that stations will soften the stance they have taken on praise and worship music in general programming. After all, stations licensed since October 1992 are licensed to serve the "broader Christian community", not those outside it!

20.07.02 - Anniversary of Keith Green's death.

From Wes Jay, Woodlands Media.

Twenty years after his life was cut short by a light aircraft crash on 28 July 1982, Keith Green's music continues to have a profound affect on people's lives. Keith is best remembered for songs like "Your Love Broke Through", "You Put This Love In My Heart" and "Grace By Which I Stand".

Hundreds of artists have covered Keith's music over the years including Marcia Hines, Russ Taff, Phil Keaggy, Steven Curtis Chapman, Rich Mullins, Petra, Susan Ashton, Margaret Becker, plus Aussie Rebecca St James who recorded "O Lord You're Beautiful" on her Grammy winning "Pray" album.

"I grew up hearing about Keith and his life, and how he was so uncompromising, really passionate for the Lord," Rebecca recalls.

Melody Green's description of Keith in the opening notes of "Keith Green - The Ministry Years Vol. 2" explores this further. "Keith Green always seemed to be rushing somewhere, on an intense journey spiralling upward. Whether he was pounding his piano, pouring his heart into a song, or preaching a message that pinned you to your seat, Keith was always electric, stirring strong emotions in all who listened. Many of Keith's songs are not exactly 'easy-listening'. A few are even unsettling, but Keith never thought that what made a song Christian was the amount of sugar coating it had that made it easy to swallow. Many of you who listen will be struggling, no doubt faced with the same questions Keith faced. How can you live a holy life in a world filled with compromise? What kind of service is the Lord asking you? Keith had the guts to ask, and to wrestle until he got an answer."

18.07.02 - Hillsong blessed at #4.

From AJ Hulsman.

This week, 'Blessed', the new CD by Hillsong Church (Sydney) debuted at number 4 on the national ARIA album chart. It comes in just below Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eminem & Nelly. It is also the highest placed Australian album knocking off Lee Kernaghan & coming in above the likes of Kylie Minogue and Grinspoon. Check the charts out here.

In related ARIA album chart news... After 23 weeks in Australia's Top 50 album chart, US rockers P.O.D.'s groundbreaking CD 'Satellite' is sitting pretty at #32 (highest position was #19). Their chart position has been helped by a TV advertising campaign by Warner.

18.07.02 - The Teapot Dome Scandal.

12.07.02 - Carpetman.

From Carpetman.

Fiery Fergus has passed on. We've all had a good time, but we all felt that it was time to move on.

In the last few months, Carpetman (that's me) has been busy working in my home studio on a new solo EP, and I've just scored my first "hit". The first completed track Azure will be featured in issue 50 of the magazine Computer Music, which is due out in September. Every month the mag reviews four of the reader demos that they receive, and include the tracks on the CD that somes with the mag. "Azure" will be one of these featured tracks and, until I complete my EP, its the only way folks can get the full track. If you want a snippet, you can download part of Azure here.

Computer Music is a fab resource mag for anyone doing any recording on their own gear and it features most things from "how do I get started?" to some hard-core stuff on recording and producing music. Well recommended, especially Issue 50 with Azure.

12.07.02 - Vote for Chris Mundy at Flicker Records.

From Chris Mundy.

I've recently been added to a website owned by a US record company called Flicker Records (with artists such as T-Bone, Phat Chance etc). A couple of my songs are available to download from the site. Basically what happens is once an artist is added to the site, people can vote for them. The artists with the most votes are considered for a deal with Flicker Records. So make sure you all go here and vote for me!

12.07.02 - Arielle's new EP soon to be released.

12.07.02 - Parachute Band safe in LA.

From Wes Jay, Woodlands Media.

Arriving at LA's International Airport on Independence Day, NZ's Parachute Band faced an anxious time. The terminal was shutdown shortly after their arrival as a gunman entered the international terminal, approached the counter of El Al, the Israeli national airline and opened fire. The gunman killed two people and wounded at least three before he was shot dead by a security guard.

A spokesperson for the Parachute Band said, "We're all fine. We were a bit anxious, but are looking forward to the tour." The band was on its way to perform at the International Worship Institute Conference in Dallas, Forth Worth.

12.07.02 - TRAA song of the week - Rain.

From Wes Jay, Woodlands Media.

Like Kate Spence's amazing 1999 ballad "Deeply in Love", the new CCC Oxford Falls song "Rain" featuring Katya Winspear, Dan Markovina and Hannah Warn is beginning to gain strong attention of key AC and INSP radio programmers around the country.

Songwriter Jeff Crabtree says that he wrote the song after Darlene Zschech prophetically read a passage of Scripture over his life at a combined CCC Oxford Falls/Hillsong worship team retreat last year. The passage (Isaiah 55: 8 -13) planted a seed in his heart. This was one of several significant "God moments" as Jeff describes them, that led to "Rain" being written.

05.07.02 - Toupee news.

From Toupee Records.

Rhubarb / Tonjip tour...
Two of your favourite Toupee bands kick off a huge tour at The Zoo, Brisbane this Saturday night - 6th July and they are coming your way soon (if you happen to be in Australia that is). Special guest Diana Ah Naid will join most of the July dates playing her unique brand of acoustic rock.

Antiskeptic added to everything!

Their single 'Called' was first added to TripleM, then TripleJ and the band has secured a spot at the M-ONE festivals and supports with Motor Ace. After touring nationally for a month the boys are trying to get some sleep but alas, Adelaide on the 5th July and Melbourne all-ages on the 6th July. Oh well, the rock takes over sometimes.

Fiery Fergus released the EP 'Now Appearing' in 2001. Carpetman's influences draw on a contemporary interpretation of the feel of Pink Floyd, Sting and Dire Straights in a very contemporary fashion. 03.07.02 - Christian music is HOT HOT HOT!

From Wes Jay, Woodlands Media.

In the past year, Christian music sales have increased 6.7% with the genre outselling classical and jazz (combined), plus soundtracks almost five times. Now mainstream media is beginning to take notice - again.

CNN - the international news network - recently highlighted Jars of Clay on the weekend edition of CNN Headline News. This week, CNN presents a story on labelmates Third Day.

The band's "Come Together" tour has also come to the attention of Pollstar, the concert industry's leading weekly trade publication. This month, the magazine features Third Day on the cover (8 July edition) and in interview as its "Hotstar of the week". Pollstar's stats show that the band's tour is grossing more than Nickelback, Pink, and Wu-Tang Clan!

03.07.02 - Rebecca's sabbatical.

From Wes Jay, Woodlands Media.

One lady who has avoided becoming a mainstream act, and there's been plenty of offers, is Rebecca St James. RSJ is in Australia taking a well earned break. In the past few weeks, she's spent time on the Gold Coast (Queensland) with Alabaster Box and Rocfish. She's even had time to do a little swing dancing, cycling, as well as visit Hillsong in Sydney where she attended 12 years ago.

RSJ's latest radio single "Song of Love" is a hitpick for several program managers this week and is gradually being picked up by stations around the country. You can watch the video here.

Incidentally, listeners to the US K-LOVE radio network recently voted Rebecca their favourite female singer.

03.07.02 - Roma Waterman - Poor Man's Clothes.

From Wes Jay, Woodlands Media.

One reader (of TRAA) reports that Roma Waterman's latest song is "getting a flogging" on Life FM in Adelaide. The good news (if "getting a flogging" is good news) is that "Poor Man's Clothes" is receiving tremendous radio and retailer support right across the country.

We asked Roma how the song came about...

"Poor Man's Clothes" relates back to a time when I was ill and began to spend more and more time reading. I picked up a book by Rick Joyner called "The Final Quest" which is a dream or vision he had about the end times. In one section of the book there is a gentleman on a journey who finally meets the Lord. But he's very embarrassed to stand in front of God because he's wearing such a dirty cloth. However, the Lord tells him it is the cloth of humility, and without it, he can neither see the Lord for who he is, nor be the person he was called to be. Being curious the man looks under the cloth to find the most beautiful, shiny armour. It was so shiny he couldn't see the Lord. He began to think he was the most amazing warrior, then suddenly realised what he was doing. He put the cloth back and the Lord said to him again to always wear it, because with the cloth of humility, he would always see things as they really are.

I cried when read that, because I knew I wanted to wear that cloth. It didn't matter how rusty and ragged it was or that it looked like poor man's clothes. I love the song because it's me talking to the Lord.

"Poor Man's Clothes" is the second single from Roma's comeback (though it was never intended to be) album "Fearless Courage". Look out for news of a national tour soon!

03.07.02 - Roma takes off.

From ACAN.

Roma Waterman hits the road for the next three weeks, with a number of gigs in Sydney and on into the Gold Coast by late July. Keep checking the gig guide for details.
