20.06.02 - Vision FM Visionathon 2002.
From Vision FM.
Last minute miracle in impossible situation
- Visionathon 2002 Building Appeal raises almost $135,000 in 49 hours.
Brisbane, QLD: There were tears and smiles all round at Midnight on Sunday night, May 26, at the Vision FM studios in Underwood, Brisbane. Midnight marked the end to a 49-hour 'on-air' appeal that commenced at 9 am on Friday morning, May 24. Called 'Visionathon 2002 Building Appeal', the aim of the event was to raise $125,000 (PLUS) from more than 100 communities across Australia who currently receive the Vision FM radio signal. The funds raised are to be used to pay cash for an industrial warehouse currently leased by Vision FM and its parent body, United Christian Broadcasters (UCB) Australia. After a final hour that left listeners and staff with their heads spinning, the Grand Total raised for the weekend stood at $134,710.
"We had already put a deposit on the building," said Mr Ian Worby, Chief Executive of UCB Australia. "But rather than go into debt to purchase the building, we felt God wanted us to believe Him for the funds to buy it outright. The $125,000 was to pay for the building and the 'plus' was for some special projects that United Christian Broadcasters and Vision FM are currently working on," Mr Worby said.
With only an hour to go of Visionathon 2002, the task looked impossible. With still around $42,000 needed to hit even the base target (not to mention the 'plus') listeners and staff alike looked to God to provide a miracle. "At 11 pm we stopped and prayed," recalls Andrew Robinson - known as Robo by listeners across Australia. "We knew that this was an impossible situation, but we believe that God can do the impossible! As listeners paused and joined together in prayer in homes across Australia, we prayed for a miracle - and God came through." At 11:15 pm Ian Worby, Andrew Pitchford (Vision FM Network Station Manager) and John Marks (UCB Australia Board Member and General Manager of Rhema FM Newcastle) came into the tally room to make an announcement. Mr Worby explained that an anonymous caller had just phoned through with a donation of $45,000. This meant that suddenly the grand total stood at just over $128,000. As the enormity of this statement sank in to the staff who were listening, an amazing thing took place. "The phone lines started to light up," Andrew Pitchford says, "and they didn't stop. The eight phone lines into the building were jammed for over 30 minutes. As one line came free, another call would come in. Pledge after pledge of funds toward the 'plus'. By midnight an additional $6,000 had been received through this last minute flood of calls, leaving the final total for the weekend at $134,710." Whether listening on a radio in a car or home in one of over 100 towns of Australia, or present in the studio tally room, those that had witnessed this modern day miracle would be impacted by the memory for a lifetime. "With the theme 'You can be the one who makes a difference', we appreciated all those who gave - whether that be one dollar or $45,000." Mr Worby said.
Vision FM is Australia’s fastest growing national radio network, broadcasting to 95 local communities across Australia from its headquarters in Underwood, Brisbane. Vision FM is primarily aimed at country Australian families. With a unique 100% Christian music format and a fine programming balance of 65% music and 35% spoken programs, Vision FM appeals to a wide range of listeners seeking a ‘family friendly’ radio experience. Community interest has already been shown for over 250 locations across Australia in the months ahead and UCB Australia is working to have these communities covered as soon as possible. UCB Australia's vision is "to provide Christian radio to every Australian."

06.06.02 - A tribute to the late Hansie Cronje.
By Rodney Davison (Quest Australia).
We wish to acknowledge and remember the late Hansie Cronje for being a great cricket player as well as an inspirational captain of the South African team during the time of his leadership.
Initially aiming to follow a straight path in life, the temptation to give into greed overtook him. This was exposed in public; was seen to have let many down, the result of this character flaw having enormous consequences and implications.
To Hansie’s defense, much sorrow for his wrongdoing was expressed in tears. For him, it was certainly a battle seeking to regain credibility after the offense. At the time of his death, he was in the process of rebuilding his life, at times working with some of the more underprivileged.
We offer up our prayers and condolences at this difficult time for his family, loved ones and friends.
Whilst not excusing the mistakes Hansie made in his life, we would certainly hope that the Cricket community and indeed the community in general would acknowledge that even out of adverse circumstances, good things can come when approached with a sincere heart and attitude resulting in transformed character.
We believe that Hansie was displaying these characteristics before the tragedy of his premature death and hope that people would acknowledge this in their memory of him.
(written by Rodney Davison, former NSW cricketer on behalf of Quest Australia, a not-for-profit Christian organisation providing volunteer, chaplaincy and welfare services at Major Sporting Events) |
