From Marty Kendall.
May 27 - 31 is SU Chaplaincy Week... a time where we celebrate the impact Scripture Union’s 110 primary and secondary school chaplains are having in our community.
To kick the week off on Monday 27th May, come along to the lower stage in the Queen Street Mall from 12.00 noon - 1.00pm as we celebrate ChappyCino Day. Enjoy a free cappuccino, courtesy of The Coffee Club, and be entertained by Chris Mundy and the Tone Rangers, as well as a troupe of professional and student dancers.
To take advantage of the offer of a free cappuccino, please see Yvette Adamson when you arrive, who will issue you with a sticker. This sticker entitles you to a free cappuccino during the event, instead of receiving a voucher to be redeemed later. |
16.05.02 - Reformation Tour.
From Well-Being Australia.
Luther, Zwingli, Huss, Calvin are all names intimately associated with the Reformation and Dr Mark Tronson the retired Australian Cricket Team Chaplain would like to show you where they preached and subsequently brought such change positive upon the world.
Mark is a qualified InnerFaith tour leader. He has led Christian pilgrims on previous tours to both the Holy Land and Turkey. In Turkey his tours survey the seven churches of The Revelation, Ephesus as well as visiting Gallipoli.
His Reformation Tour will visit Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia and take in such sights as Tabor in Czechoslovakia where John Huss preached his fiery Reformation sermons. Huss was later burnt at the stake.
"It is at such locations we can pause, praising God, and recount the stories of these remarkable reformers. This brings history alive and relevant to each one of us", Mark explained.
The schedule is to leave Australia on Saturday September 28 for just over 2 weeks. Mark will meet the party in Frankfurt Germany. He'll be coming from the West Indies after a week's preaching crusades.
For further enquiry please contact Mark on (02) 4474 3554, email bushorchestra@acr.net.au.
Dr Tronson, a Baptist Minister is Chairman of Well-Being Australia. He ministers at Timeout in Moruya where the athletes from the Australian Institute of Sport visit for rest and recuperation and he edits the Retired Australian Cricketers Bi-Annual Newsletter, "Life After Cricket" ministry. |
14.05.02 - Launch of the 2002 Red Shield Appeal.
From Major Wayne Pittaway, Public Relations Secretary, The Salvation
Army.
All around Australia, the month of May is when The Salvation Army collects for the annual Red Shield Appeal.
The Red Shield is our symbol of reaching out and helping people get back on their feet. We provide a shield of care that has meant survival, security, shelter, love, warmth, clothing, food, even a job to over 1 million Australians last year. That's a massive increase of 100,000 people more than the previous year.
How are Red Shield Appeal funds used?
People who suffer from poverty, homelessness, family breakdown, domestic violence and addictions are not just statistics. They are individuals who are caught in circumstances often beyond their control; people who need assistance to cope with life's complexities.
Every week, funds from the Red Shield Appeal are used by the Salvos to shield those in need with 150,000 meals, 10,500 food vouchers, 2800 beds for the homeless, and refuge for 600 victims of abuse. Every week.
For Kerry, a single Mum, the Red Shield Appeal means she won't have to go on secretly starving herself in order to put food on the table for her children.
For Paula, who is homeless, your Red Shield donation means she can find refuge from the streets and a violent father at home.
For Ben, who was abused by a stepfather, assistance from the Red Shield Appeal means he will have a chance to rebuild his life.
Without your support for the Red Shield Appeal, we wouldn't be able to maintain these services and many others.
Here a just a few examples of the hundreds of programmes operated by The Salvation Army across Australia:
Visionary Images (Melbourne).
A project to help the residents of a youth refuge with issues of self-esteem, communication, self-confidence and personal insight through the medium of art. It has attracted the attention of UNESCO and European organisations as a model to emulate. Their self-designed website is a "must-see".
Central Violence Intervention Program (Adelaide).
An interagency initiative to reduce domestic violence. The program offers specialist services to men, women and children experiencing domestic violence. Its broad aim is the establishment of an integrated and co-ordinated interagency and criminal justice response that promotes the safety of women and children and challenges the use of violence in the home.
The Bridge Programme (Perth).
Offers a number of services to people experiencing problems associated with alcohol and other drugs, which are almost invariably accompanied with legal, health, social or financial problems.
Learning Curve Training Centre (Hobart).
Provides people who have been unemployed more than 6 months with necessary skill for re-entry into the work place, including computer training, customer service, and building and grounds maintenance. Participants have also been involved in community activities such as school programs, carol services, and community afternoon teas.
Flying Padre (Northern Territory).
Takes counselling, practical assistance and religious services -- including marriages, funerals and christenings -- to 120 outback stations spread over 2.25 million square km.
