28.12.01 - Voice International begins broadcasts into China.

From Voice International.

The lifetime desire of an Australian Chinese came to fulfilment at the weekend when Voice International - Australia's international radio began broadcasting to Asia including China through its Broadcast Centre at Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland. Mrs Annie Yum, who was born in China, is the Senior Producer/Presenter of the Chinese Mandarin language program for Voice International. She says "It has been my lifetime desire to broadcast the Gospel into China to my people and I have proudly achieved this today."

Voice International made history as it began broadcasting in shortwave in three languages - Chinese Mandarin, Indonesian Bahasa and English. Its Director Asia/Pacific, Mike Edmiston, said Voice International has introduced a new and innovative approach to shortwave radio by broadcasting its programs on a FM format. He said it was a proud moment for Voice International today as it saw the Lord Jesus Christ glorified through its broadcasts.

Riani Brookshaw the Senior Producer/Presenter in Bahasa Indonesia and Phil Gray, the Program Manager English said they felt an awesome power of God as they began broadcasting.

Reports from audiences in China and Indonesia say the Voice International signal is loud and clear. The signal is being transmitted through the former Radio Australia transmission facilities at the Cox Peninsula near Darwin acquired by Voice International.

Also making history was the launch of the Voice International website designed by Indonesian born, Miss Paula Financio. Miss Financio said the website is attractive to young people and will not only contain relevant information for Voice International listeners but its listeners will also have the ability to chat with any of the language broadcasters. The website address is www.vil.com.au.

The Station Manager of Voice International Ray Moti says while the station is broadcasting ten hours per day it is on course to broadcast 24 hours per day in each of the three languages by the middle of next year.

19.12.01 - Triple Seven secures Melbourne licence.

From Woodlands Media.

After 25 years of prayer, letters of support and test broadcasts, the Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) has awarded Triple Seven Communications a radio licence to serve the Melbourne Christian community.

Chairman, George Morgan, today praised God for the opportunity to serve the Christian community, and thanked the 1000s of people who have contributed faithfully with time and financial support over the years. "Gaining a licence for Melbourne was feat of time, prayer and patience," Mr Morgan admitted. Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia, but the last capital city to be awarded a Christian radio licence. Almost 20 groups applied for three metropolitan licences.

Triple Seven's task was even more difficult with three other Christian groups seeking licences. One of these, Christian Community Broadcasters merged with Triple Seven. The Australian Broadcasting Authority found that Triple Seven best represented the needs of the Christian community in this city. George Morgan today extended an invitation to supporters of unsuccessful aspirant groups Melbourne Gospel Radio and Catholic Broadcasting Ltd to become members of Triple Seven.

Triple Seven plans to be mid-late 2002 on 89.9 FM. A thanksgiving service will be conducted early in the New Year.

18.12.01 - The day Christmas came to the carpark.

From 96Five FM.

96five FM supported Operation Christmas Child as the station’s Christmas appeal. Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritans Purse, a ministry started by Franklin Graham. Over a 5 week on air campaign 96five encouraged listeners to fill an empty shoe box with items like toys, books, soap, pencils etc.

All 96five’s announcers also went to work filling their own shoe boxes and sharing with listeners what they were putting in their shoe box. Listeners were asked to bring their shoe boxes to the 96five carpark on Saturday December 15th for the Big Collection day.

A team of 20 volunteers from Samaritans Purse, arrived at 96five at about 7am on Saturday to set up all the tables and the free BBQ for all the people who bought in shoe boxes. People started delivering their boxes by 7.30am, and it didn’t stop till about 4pm when the weary team were packing up after a long day. Local band Rookie also played live in the carpark and lead singer Andrew Whitaker had to have his legs waxed after 500 shoe boxes were received.

By the end of the day over 2300 shoe boxes were received - a fantastic effort from 96five’s listeners. Samaritans Purse national project manager, Trevor Adams said, "we were so excited by the support of 96five’s listeners and the 96five team, everyone just worked so hard. Each shoe box is so special and they mean so much to children who just have nothing".

The shoe boxes will be distributed to children from countries like East Timor, Thailand, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and many others.

06.12.01 - Paul Colman support Christmas Angel Appeal.

From World Vision.

Christian music sensation, Paul Colman, is taking time out from his busy recording schedule in the US to urge Australians to get behind World Vision's Christmas Angel Appeal.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to celebrate the true spirit of Christmas by giving the gift of a brighter future to some of the world's poorest children," said Paul Colman.

"Christmas for most Aussies is a time for fun, food and family," he said. "I think we really need to remind ourselves that it's also a time of giving, and more importantly a time for looking out for those who live without the joys we take for granted. People are not only living without necessities during this time of year, many are on an uphill battle all year round."

Shoppers can visit World Vision's Christmas Angels stands at shopping centres across Australia in the lead up to Christmas. For a donation of $2, $5 or $10, shoppers will receive two colourful Christmas Angels - one to sign and hang on the World Vision Christmas tree at the shopping centre, and one to take home to hang on their own Christmas tree. The angels are designed to be reminders of this lasting special gift as well as being an attractive decoration.

"Money raised will help to provide life's essentials to children in desperate need in places like Africa, South East Asia and South America, giving them a brighter future this Christmas," Paul Colman said.

Families will be able to arrange to sponsor a child at the shopping centres. World Vision organisers are aiming to attract child sponsors for 3000 children.

Around the world, World Vision Australia operates 2,600 development projects funded by child sponsorship, assisting 1.3 million children, their families and their communities. Through sponsorship, Australians can help give children and their families a better chance in life and bring about lasting change, by providing assistance in health and nutrition, improved agricultural techniques, clean drinking water and the chance to go to school.

The Paul Colman Trio stands at the forefront of the Contemporary Christian Music scene in Australia and is recording a new album in Nashville, USA, with well-recognised producer Monroe Jones. The new album will hit the stands early next year and is set to take the international market by storm.

For more information on your nearest participating shopping centre please contact World Vision on 13 32 40 or visit www.worldvision.com.au.
