Fiery Fergus played at the Queensland Rock Awards on Friday night, but we didn't make it through to the next round (boo hoo!). We did not get the crowd numbers we needed, partly because we had the mug's slot at 7:00 when much of our potential audience would have been at home, tucking into tea whilst watching the compost man on Gardening Australia. Anyhow, we need to develop the active promotion of the band if we are going to persuade people to come and see us, because we know that they will enjoy the show once they get there.
I
reckon we put on a good show. Our music is distinctly original, it covers a big dynamic range, and we are improving our delivery all the time. In terms of pure technical ability, I would rank Fiery Fergus at about 3rd out of the five bands who performed on Friday. The rest was up crowd support and the judges' taste in music.

Smooth jazz and blues singer,
Lisa Reynolds will appear at CityGate Christian Church, 1422 Gympie Road, Aspley on Sunday 24th June. Based on the Sunshine Coast, Lisa has performed at many significant events including the
Australian Gospel Music Festival that attracts 40,000 people and is held each year at Toowoomba. In 2000 Lisa released her CD titled
“Fall Under Grace” which was produced by
Craig Ross who is well known for his work with
Steve Grace and other prominent gospel artists. Her CD features top local musicians including legendary blues guitarist
Steve Apirana.

The Australian Broadcasting Authority has now asked us to estimate the number of people who would be interested in listening to
96.5.
The quick and simple way to do that is to ask every listener to sign a petition at your local church, at 96.5 or at any of the Christian Book Stores wherever 96.5 can be heard.

The Sammies (this name really is catching on) recently played at the
100 Fold Battle of the Bands. Playing in the afternoon heats,
Telegram Sam played a fairly strong set, although the technologically challenged Graham found the 5 minute set-up
time a bit stressful. The band received some very enthusiastic feedback from the judges and crowd, in particular Angus the Sound Guy. Telegram Sam managed to pull of third place ($100 gift voucher - not bad) and congrats to winners
4Given. A sort of cross between The Partrdge Family (they are all related) and
Bob Marley and The Whalers - these guys would look cool playing banjos. The most concerning part of the event was the enthusiastic feedback from one judge - while raving about Christys' voice for about 5 minutes he encouraged her to really explore other musical styles to develop her vocal talent. Was he telling our singer to leave our band? Back off buddy!!
After playing a few gigs in recent weeks,
Telegram Sam are easing off a bit to focus on their upcoming recording.

The 2nd week of the School Holidays will see
Telegram Sam enter the Studio to record their first radio single. The Sammies are proud to announce that
Caleb James (Rhubarb, Leo Nine/Battered Fish, The Frugals, Elementary
Penguin) will be producing the single - to be heard on the airwaves around September time. Caleb is without doubt one of the (if not THE) most gifted young producers in Brisbane and Australia and the band are extremely excited about what Caleb will bring to the table. The band will record one single for radio play, and also lay down the drumtracks for a possible EP release later in the year. Stay

The big news for us is that our new record-
"MAIN ATTRACTION" is all but complete!!! We spent January, February and a little bit of March in the USA recording the new CD. We made heaps of new friends over there in Louisville, Kentucky- and had an amazing time in the studio as well as tasting all of the fast-food miracles that America has to offer. We were able to play a number of shows whilst we were there (one of them to 5000+) and were warmly received.
The album was produced in a 200- year old log cabin converted into a studio- at Melody Hill Farm - and our producer-
Vince Emmit- has described the sound of the record as
"Alabaster Box- all grown up". We learnt so much about working in a studio from Vince (who also happens to be the most rockin' guitarist ever) and we are ecstatic about how the record has come together. Sam was especially excited as he was able to break free from his acoustic guitar to "wail on an electric" for most of the tracks. Vince is currently in Australia- and will be putting the final touches on the record over the next two- weeks.
The new CD will be available to the general public on the Alabaster Box- "Main Attraction- World Tour" (Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and the USA), which begins in August. For information on the details of the tour- keep a close eye on our newly updated web site at

The new-look website includes updated gig information, bios, tour dates, and a whole heap of other cool AB related mumbo jumbo.
On the home front, we have had a great time playing at some great festivals over the last few months.
Forest Edge in Melbourne, the Australian Gospel Music Festival in Toowoomba and
Lifefest in Bowen were all outstanding successes. Credit must go to both organisations for their professionalism. Photos of these events will be appearing on the website in the very near future. Similarly our visit to Perth two-weeks ago proved to be a very successful time away.

Fiery Fergus will be playing in the
Queensland Rock Awards tomorrow (Friday 15 June) at 7:00 pm. We start the line-up of 6 bands, and the timetable is pretty strict, so if you want to come and see us, make sure you are there at 7:00. Its at the Plough Inn, South Bank, Brisbane. Tickets are $8 from Fiery Fergus, or $10 on the door.
If you were wondering what happened at the
Triple Z unearthed competition, we put on a great show and the crowd got up and boogied on our opening number. I ran a competition (the first and only prize being a free beer - we spare no expense!) for the best description of the style of music we play. We had quite a few enthusiastic suggestions during the set, but the award went to Adam who came up with something totally original, but as it was about 1,000,000 words long I can't repeat it here (I like Pink Floyd on prozac, or Crowded House gets evicted).
Our problem is that our music is so original, and it covers such a broad range (from ballads to rock and roll to some weird groovy stuff), that I have a real problem in describing its style, and anyone who can help us here has earned his or her beer. This was also a problem for the judges, who awarded the prize (a slot on Triple Z) to a punk band that thrashed out the usual stuff with marginally more musical ability than a car alarm.
If you want to hear a band that sounds just like the other 9,999,999 guitar/bass/drums metal/grunge/punk bands, don't come and see Fiery Fergus.

the eternal search for the perfect interview, Andrew "AJ" Hulsman has resigned from his Program, Music Director & Station
producer (including SPORK radioYouth Show) jobs at Community Radio North FM in Hornsby, Sydney and has been appointed Program, Music Director, schedule formatting, traffic & production at Riverina Christian Radio Inc new radio station LIFE FM 101.1 in Wagga Wagga as of Monday 25th
June. He will continue in his role at North FM for another 2 weeks before leaving for Wagga
Wagga and he can be contacted at ajthedj99@hotmail.com.
Luckily for us, AJ will still be able to make his regular pilgrimages

- 100 fold Battle of the Bands 2001.

The second annual
100 fold Battle of the Bands was held last Saturday at Lions Den Cafe in the city with 12 bands playing off during the day. The calibre of the acts was high and covered a range of styles from worship to punk, and rap to current rock. Representatives of
Mullet TV on the Gold Coast and Spork Radio in Sydney were there to check out the acts. On Saturday night the concert began with
'Paradox', last years winners, performing a rocking set to hand over their crown. Then third place winners,
'Telegram Sam' performed a very polished set followed by cello-accompanied folk-rocker
Geoff Rankin, the second place winner. First place, winning a live recording, went to
'4Given'. These guys are Solomon Islanders based on the Sunshine Coast. They look like reggae heads but sound like
Matchbox20. Their set finished out the night with the crowd joining them in worship. Battle of the Bands is one of a series of 100 fold events hosted each year by CityGate Christian Church at Aspley. This year's event was sponsored by 96.5 Family FM, Ellaways Music, Ebanc Trade, Lions Den Cafe, Pure Magic Productions, Angus Woodhead Sound, Abstract Lighting, and Victory Gifts & Books.
100 fold Battle of the Bands 2001 gave a dozen bands the opportunity to perform in a great venue to a very appreciative crowd.

It
looks like Earthsuit won't be touring in
October as previously planned. At this stage no rescheduled date
has been announced. Sonfest 2002 is still a possibility.

- Geoff Rankin & The Whosmewatts??
No further announcements have been made about an official name for the
Geoff Rankin band. At this stage the band collectively is still known as Geoff Rankin. In the past the band has been known
Geoff Rankin & The Jam Drops, and Geoff Rankin & The Wild Colonial Band to name a couple.
Geoff is keen to retain the 'Geoff Rankin' aspect of the name but thinks a name for the band would be a welcome addition.
