March 2001 News In Brief

31.03.01 - Dumpster show cancelled. This Thursday's Dumpster show at Rics Bar has been cancelled.

30.03.01 - Fiery Fergus needs your support. Fiery Fergus' front man Martin Jacobs writes: Fiery Fergus will be playing in the first round of the Queensland Rock Awards on Wednesday 4th April at the "Rumjungle" in the Brackenridge Tavern (Corner of Denham and Barrett Streets, Brackenridge, Brisbane). There are six other bands and we are last on the line-up so we will be on at about 10:45 pm. When we have finished, the winners will be voted through to the next round on a "clapometer" basis. There is no entry charge.

We could really do with your support on Wednesday, so if you haven't made it to one of our gigs in a while, please try and make it to this one. Cheers.

30.03.01 - Change of artist at the Lions Den Cafe. Christian singer and guitarist Joseph Crum is playing at the Lions Den Cafe this Saturday night in place of CVB. Click here for the Gig Guide.

29.03.01 - Australian Gospel Music Festival news. The Australian Gospel Music Festival, now approaching its third Festival, has become the LARGEST gathering of gospel music in the nation. Thousands of people are expected to soak up the atmosphere at the Easter Festival which will feature 130 acts, 400 performers and 19 separate on 10 stages!

This year's Festival will have the coolest (and biggest) line-up of gospel artists ever in Australia's history. Every major Australian gospel music artist will be at the Festival including the
Paul Colman Trio, Steve Grace, Alabaster Box, Rhubarb, Claire Hazzard, Peter Shurley, Adrian Ross, Colin Buchanan, Andrew Ironside, The Frugals, Steve Apirana, Sons of Korah and David Evans... just to name a few! Also on the bill is a great selection of international bands such as New Zealand's Parachute Band, The Lads, South African rave duo JC Culture and US djs Dr Onionskin & AJ Mora.

But if you think that the AGMF is just about great music.... than think again!! The Festival will be jam-packed with 3 huge Firework Displays, Rave Rooms, Late Night Movies, a Festival Cafe, Festival Markets, Stalls, Rides, the Festival Village, Competitions, a Bush Dance, Kids Concert, Big Rock Show, Street Festival, Giveaways... and did we mention HEAPS of music!! 27.03.01 - Fill in a 2min online letter to support 96Five. On April 17th 96.5 Family FM will be required to submit their application for a permanent FM community license. The Australian Broadcasting Authority places more importance on individual letters than on petitions. However it doesn't like the letters coming directly to their office. They prefer the letters to be collected by applicants and forwarded in bulk. By filling in the 2min online letter here your letter will be added to the submission to the ABA and you will be playing your part to help 96Five get the full-time licence they have been after for over 25 years.

26.03.01 - Muppet's new single. Muppet has just released their new single 'Something So Sweet'. Other new songs 'All I Wanted' and 'Neverland' are also on the CD. You can order it over the net or get it at any of our upcoming shows. The new single is only $7 ($5 if you live in the US) and comes with a free sticker. 'Run For Your Life' is still available and as a special offer you can get both CDs for only $10. This offer is only available while stocks last so get in fast before we run out!

If you would like to order the 'star' stickers (as seen on the opening page of our website www.go.to/muppetrock or Muppet buttons you can order those also for $1 each. To order Muppet merchandise in America you can email Steven at monkey72@hotmail.com. To order merch from anywhere else email Darny at darnikathedrummer@hotmail.com.

22.03.01 - 96Five: Now is the time to decide. Rob Adsett, Chair of 96.5 Family Radio has announced that the Australian Broadcasting Authority has finally invited a submission from 96.5 for the final community licence available in Brisbane. Other applicants are also expected to bid for the same licence.

Applications close on April 17th and Mr Adsett called on the Christian community to support the stations bid by writing letters of support and becoming financial members.

The station will post, fax or email ideas for letter writers to follow. A phone call on 3217 5999 will provide details of membership. Mr Adsett said, 'Now is the time to decide if you want Brisbane region to have its own Christian Radio station serving the churches and the wider community'. Check out the 96Five web site here.

22.03.01 - 20% off everything from your local Christian bookstore? Sounds pretty good…Become a member of 96five and save 20% off everything from your local Christian book store - for one day only on Saturday April 7th. All the 96five team will be out in Christian bookstores all over Brisbane. So if you've been meaning to become a member or renew your membership - Saturday April 7th is the time.

22.03.01 - 96Five Prayer list. In the lead up to the license, 96.5 Family FM are asking Christians to pray for the following:

  • For the stations licence application. Please pray for Haydn Sargent, and your Board of Directors as they carefully prepare and submit the application.
  • Pray for the businesses, Churches and the Christian community to write letters of support endorsing the station in their submission for the permanent license.
  • Pray for people to become members of 96.5 Family FM as a demonstration of community support.
  • Pray for the Australian Broadcasting Authority that they will judge the application on merit.

20.03.01 - Web site making tips for bands. Are you looking for ways to make your band's web site a little more snazzier? Click here (Toupee Records) to check out 'How to make your site really work - some words of e-wisdom from Toupee's very own Webguy' and see what simple things you can do to help improve your web site today.

20.03.01 - Leo Nine - What The Heck???!!! - New Battered Fish name. Mikey from Nagasaki writes: Battered Fish have officially changed their name to Leo Nine for those of you who didn't know. Vent your anger at a this once well known trio via -toupee@toupeerecords.com. There was a tie for second place in the names department - "I can't believe it's not Battered" and "The Amazing Jeremy Bennett Movement". How Leo Nine beat out these contenders is unknown - watch this space for details.

18.03.01 - Steven Dix update - 2000 - A Great Year! Firstly big thanks to all the radio, press and video shows that are supporting me. Last year we had some great promo from the Aussie Post to heaps of airplay on radio stations around the country plus videos on CMT - now called 'One Country' on Foxtel. Also a support spot with Keith Urban (who has been no 1. on country airplay charts in the US recently and is currently in the mainstream top 40) - a big thanks to greg and marius for that one. We got a song 'She Didn't Know' on the ABC compile 'Open Road' and of course the album was released later in the year by Stallion / Warner Music.

Well, It's a new year and we have plenty of new material for a new album. And when $10,000 magically falls out of the sky, I will record them. I have found my new songs are kind of John Mellencamp in style - sort of like 'Heart n Me'. But, until then, there could still be another video or two made off 'Restless', so you may see some more clips this year (we might even get the chance to put them on the website). Of course this all costs a lot of money, so it all takes time. See you round! Warm Regards, Steven. www.stevendix.com.

18.03.01 - Yet another name change? Local outfit Squipplepippy have noticed a recent rush of band name changes and have decided not to miss out. They are considering changing their name to Battered Fish.

17.03.01 - Dependant change their name. In true Battered Fish style, local Christian band Dependant have just announced a name change for the band.  The 3-piece band is now called Focus. It is not known if they ran a 'name changing competition' like Battered Fish or not, but it can be certain that they have set a high benchmark for Battered Fish, and all subsequenters, to follow. (P.S. Subsequenters is not an actual word. If you think it should be then let us know.)

17.03.01 - Balaam's Ass beat the trend. And for all the latecomers, Balaam's Ass changed their name ages ago to Juxtapose. Again mystery surrounds the choice of name and it's origins. (Perhaps it would be good to start a 'Why did you call your band what you did?' section for this web site.)

17.03.01 - New section to open soon. It has been announced due to the recent flurry of name changes of local Christian bands to start up a whole new section dedicated to the question: 'Why did you call your band what you did?'. It is such a fascinating subject and more time than not there are fascinating reasons why bands choose the name they do. So look for it in the coming months - the new section of the site that will have you running home from school/work/uni/church in such a hurry you're likely to get a stitch.

17.03.01 - Nagasaki name change. The rumour that Nagasaki are considering changing their name to one of 3 other Japanese cities are unfounded. There has not been any official word from the band, but sources suggest that the scenic cities of Yokohama, Kumamoto & Higashikawa are not currently being considered. One person asked about the rumour thought that Higashikawa was a great name for a band. But it seems for now it is Nagasaki to stay.

17.03.01 - Change in plans for Nagasaki. Nagasaki was to release another single in the next month or two. However plans have changed and there will now be no single. Instead, an EP will be released in the second half of this year. The songs have not been confirmed yet - neither has a release date. There will be two launched though - an over 18's and an all ages launch - hopefully by September but we're not promising anything.

16.03.01 - Brisbane Easter Arts Festival - Jesus walks on water - AGAIN! The Brisbane Easter Arts Festival, BEAF, is a unique new arts event bringing together artists, performers and community to explore the notion of faith and meaning through five dynamic art forms. Spanning five days, the festival will take the visitor on journeys of spiritual expression that will challenge the community to new perspective of the story of Easter.

BEAF brings together the highly regarded talents of Harvest Rain Theatre Company with their outdoor production of "Liar? Madman? God?", an exhibition of art works and installations by selected artists, as well as a film festival and forums, writing workshops, and other special events.

16.03.01 - The Battered Fish comp closes. The Battered Fish name competition is now over.  Results announced soon.

16.03.01 - Save Battered Fish! Some people save the Whales. This group are saving the fish! They are protesting the imminent name change by Brisbane band, Battered Fish. 08.03.01 - Dumpster's new single is coming. The first single off the new Dumpster album has been finished and will be released at the end of the month.

02.03.01 - The Last Resort added to Manifesto line-up. A replacement band for The Frugals has been finally confirmed for the April Menifesto (see Gig Guide for more details). The Last Resort are now on the impressive bill which includes Never Pay Retail, Muppet, Blind and an acoustic set from Colin Hockey.

02.03.01 - Soulframe Album. Soulframe are currently recording their debut album at harmony studios.  The album will be officially launched on the 28th of April at Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church, 36-38 Paisley drive, Lawnton.  $5 entry starting at 7:00.

01.03.01 - Site Trivia from our second month! Well now www.brisbanechristianchat.com has had 2 months officially under it's belt, it is good to see that people of the world are taking an interest.
